Musicians, Guitarists, Exercise & Kinetic Chain
The basic Handmaster Plus exercise (hand open/hand closed) keeps finger muscle balance in check as it strengthens the hand muscles. Remember that the finger extensor (opening) muscles are stabilizer muscles. This is a very important point – and an issue that traditional hand exercise ignores. In other words, finger EXTENSOR muscles must be strong and supple in order to support the action of finger flexion which is obviously so important in music (and especially guitar). In kinesiology, this is referred to as a kinetic chain. Finger extensor muscles must be strong, making the flexor muscles stronger and less likely to fatigue.
