Hand Exercise & Grip - The Role of the Finger Extensor Muscles
I get a lot of questions asking about the agonist/antagonist theory to hand exercise and grip muscles, which confuses a lot of people. What is the role of the finger extensor muscles and why do I keep harping on training them properly?
The grip muscles are not an agonist/antagonist relationship as are the biceps/triceps, quadriceps/hamstrings, for example. They are a co-contraction kinetic chain. We have clearly demonstrated this is http://www.doczac.com/emg.html. The finger extensor muscles contract during grip as do the flexor muscles, obviously, together. You can view any activity that we have studied to show that the finger extensor muscles contract to support the flexor muscles, they do not relax. Hand exercise and grip is a co-contraction.
The problem with this mechanically is that, in the long term, where gripping is repetitive, the extensor muscles are obviously contracting in a small ROM (not opening hardly ever through their full natural ranges of motion (ROM)) so they become a shortened, static, unhealthy muscle group/chain over time, thus becoming weak and even easy to injure. The weaker they become, the less they can do their part to support grip and the more the grip (flexor muscles) have the full un-aided responsibility of the grip action.
Thus for best grip performance, strength, hand speed, stamina, ROM, and injury prevention, both the supportive muscles (extensors/abductors) and the action muscles (flexor/adductors) must be strengthened in the best way, that being through their full natural ROM's, like any other muscle or group. So for the grip stabilizer muscles (again, the hand opening muscles, extensors and abductors), this means they must be trained through full opening and spreading which keeps them at their best health, strength and function and stimulates the most healthy circulation for repair and maintenance of tissues. In turn, they are able to perform their best role in being there to support the grip muscles. They are then also able to offset shortening of the flexor muscles to keep the fingers, thumb, hand, wrist, carpal tunnel and elbow stable (i.e. not allowing flexor domination, collapse and joint instability).
By the way, the finger extensors would then also be best available to open the hand in hand opening functions as well... but name me a function we perform where the hand opening muscles are used - none or very few will come to mind.
So grip support seems to me to be the main role of the finger extensors, we simply need to understand that they are healthiest and strongest themselves ONLY when trained through full natural ROM's.

Hand Exercises & Grip Strength Training for Boxers
I recently had this common question from a boxer:

this help me strengthening my grip in boxing because you need strong grip to
protect your wrist and have a solid punch

Let's look at the first function. Nine muscles close the hand and nine muscles equally open the hand. For boxers to have the most strength and stability of all the hand, finger, thumb and wrist joints these muscles must not only be strong, they must be in balance. Only then will the boxer be able to best withstand the wear and tear of sparring, performing and training. Training requires so much repetitive gripping (of dumbbells, barbells, etc. meaning the finger extensor muscles are trained in a weak static position. The result can be repetitive grip injuries.
In the second function, circulation is key for the boxer as a repair cool. Hand and Finger Exercise In 2013 - Why Handmaster Plus is a Must Have

Most people have very strong closing (grip) muscles, due to repetitive
gripping, but very weak hand opening muscles. This imbalance threatens the
health of the lower arm and hand. Due to the diversity of the hand muscles, in order to have strong, healthy hands,

Baseball Grip Exercises for Batting - Hand, Wrist & Elbow Weakness

We recently had a question from one of our customers about their son experiencing extreme pain and weakness upon his first batting practice of the year. Was this an RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury)?
This is a very common problem as we start the new year in our sport after a long layoff when our training may not been very diverse or we haven't trained at all. This is especially true in grip sports such as baseball golf and tennis. Most people do not train the hands and wrists and forearms over the winter or train using dumbells being gripped but never rotated. The result is strength only in neutral position and an inability to carry strength and stability when the forearm is tasked with grip and rotation. The weakness is exacerbated and pain and instability is common... Here is my response:
It sounds like it is highly possible that your son has experienced the case where the hand wrist and elbow are trained in one position habitually or repetitively - in other words not specifically for the actions involved in batting. Two examples that are common would be either repetitive gripping with the wrist in a one or two positions only during weight training, or for example repetitive computer use or gaming. Then, when the hand, wrist and elbow are expected to act with rotation during batting, your son finds there's no strength or stability outside this range of motion. It is impossible to determine if this is the case with your son, but this is a likely scenario if he has not been batting regularly before this incident.
This is not a standard RSI by definition, but is certainly related to the concept of repetitive stress. RSI's usually refer to scenerios where one certain action is done repetitively and leads to an injury directly related to 'that' motion. I suspect that this is more a scenario where your son may have repetitively trained in one fashion and then asked his body to work outside that position where it hasn't been challenged and thus was not prepared. Make sense?
I highly suggest that he sees a healthcare professional with skill in extremity treatment and diagnosis. When exercise rehabilitation is appropriate, yes Handmaster Plus is made for exactly this role. Readers, be very sure to train the hand through closing and opening as well as through supination and pronation to ensure that you don't train your hand wrist and elbow just on one repetitive plane. This will help you to prepare for your sport or music or activity that may require grip plus rotation so that you are prepared to be strong in many planes of activity.

Hand Strengthening Exercise as Treatment for an Active Tennis Elbow

Q: recently I received a common question that I am asked about - an active extremity condition and whether it should be treated using Handmaster Plus as a hand strengthening exercise treatment. This particular question was about tennis elbow, but I commonly get asked questions of the same nature about carpal tunnel syndrome, extensor tendinitis, golfers elbow, and DeQuervain's tenosynovitis. Because of this day and age of the Internet and such vast information exchange, we can never advise the user to ‘treat’ their condition with an exercise. The reason is that only a skilled health care professional can assess whether it is the right time to challenge the tissues with rehabilitative exercise. Muscle, tendons, ligaments and/or joint surfaces may be too instable for such challenge. The result could be aggravation of the condition causing further to complicate the condition and its correction. It is highly recommended that individuals with hand, wrist forearm or elbow problems consult a healthcare professional that is educated and skilled in diagnosing and treating extremity conditions. By default, my recommendation is to locate an ART (www.activerelaese.com) or Graston technique (www.Grastontechnique.com) practitioner as they are consistently the most well-versed in diagnosing and treating extremity injuries such as tennis elbow.

A: Thanks for your question; is a very important one. If the tennis elbow condition has already developed, we must recommend that you consult with a healthcare professional. This is standard protocol because we cannot advise treatment without examination, as this would be an irresponsible suggestion. Handmaster Plus is used in the rehabilitation aspect of treatment. Again, because tennis elbow at its core usually involves hand and wrist muscle imbalance is vital that these muscles be strengthened and rebalanced, as well as be maintained, so that the condition does not continue to recur. Most of our education involves prevention, because changing poor understanding of grip related activities and how they affect the hand, wrist and elbow is what we are passionate about. That said, when I originally developed Handmaster Plus it was to complement treatment as a rehabilitative tool.

On the verge of the release of Guitar Hero 4 and Rock Star 2, popularity of (and competition for) music related video games is rocketing. With users (gamers) of all ages passionate about these video games, finger, thumb, hand, wrist & elbow injuries (RSI's like tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, gamers thumb, trigger finger, etc.) are also on the rise due to the repetitive nature of Guitar Hero and Rock Star. Like guitarist, drummers, bassists, keyboard (piano) players, wind instrumentalists and other musicians, hand muscles are enormously involved in Guitar Hero and Rock Star playing, so let's understand their role.
Very simply 9 muscles close the hand and are located on the front of the fingers, thumb, hand, wrist, forearm and elbow.
